This issue we will talk about \u201cMMA (Mastitis-inflammation of mammary glands, Metritis-inflammation of the uterus and Agalactia-lack of milk flow)\u201d. The death losses from affected sows are low, but the losses in piglets are high (15-30%) due to starvation, hypoglycemia and overlying by sows. MMA is often followed by prolonged <a href=\"http:\/\/apanano.com\/technical-support\/quan-ly-heo-sinh-san-phan-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">farrowing process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>MMA (Mastitis &#8211; Metritis &#8211; Agalactia)<\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h4>There are 3 groups of MMA in sows:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Coliform mastitis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Staphylococcal and Streptococcal mastitis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Management induced mastitis.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2022\u00a0Coliform mastitis<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; E.coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Pseudomonas spp.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0Bacteria release endotoxin results in reduce milk production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0Sows will get sick and piglets have diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0Always occur in PRRS unstable herd.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0Contaminate sources are sow feces, dirty floor, contaminated feed and water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0Dark blue surrounding the affected udder, severe udder edema and udder skin congestion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0Caudal udders are more affected than cranial udders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0Hematological findings are decrease hemoglobin concentration, decrease in serum calcium, magnesium and glucose and increase in phosphorus concentration.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-268 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/apanano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_1.jpg\" alt=\"20160603_1\" width=\"800\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_1.jpg 800w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_1-300x144.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_1-768x368.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_1-30x14.jpg 30w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Picture1-2 Severe udder edema and skin congestion.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>\u2022\u00a0Staphylococcal and Streptococcal mastitis<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Less acute &amp; severe than coliform mastitis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Do not make sows ill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 1 or 2 mammary glands will be affected (swollen, hard, discolored).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Contaminate source is from her own skin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Shower &amp; disinfectant gestating sows before move to farrowing house help to reduce mastitis causes by Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2022 Management induced mastitis<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Vitamin E and Selenium deficiency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Vitamin B12 deficiency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Overfeeding gestating sow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Low fiber in gestation and lactation feed cause constipation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Feeding exceed protein the sow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ca:P imbalance in gestation and lactation feed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Chronic heat stress before farrowing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Short acclimation period before farrowing.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-269 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/apanano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_2.jpg\" alt=\"20160603_2\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_2.jpg 800w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_2-300x225.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_2-768x576.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_2-30x23.jpg 30w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_2-520x390.jpg 520w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_2-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Picture3: Agalactia symptom.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Management Control and Prevention<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Clean, disinfect and dry farrowing crate at least 5 days before move in pre-farrowing sows.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Disinfectant and move pre-farrowing sows to farrowing house 5-7 days before due date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Feed pre-farrowing sows with pre-farrowing diet (low energy, high fiber, low Ca and adding antibiotics).<\/p>\n<p>Use gestation feed 2 kg+rice bran 1 kg+antibiotics (total 3 kg\/day)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Feed them until 3 days post-farrowed then change to lactation feed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Add clean and fresh water into dry feed help to improve feed intake and reduce constipation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Improve ventilation and temperature in farrowing houses.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4>Preventive medication program for sows<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-270 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/apanano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_3_en.jpg\" alt=\"20160603_3_en\" width=\"792\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_3_en.jpg 792w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_3_en-300x143.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_3_en-768x366.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/20160603_3_en-30x14.jpg 30w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is very important that mastitis is diagnosed early and that prompt treatment is given.
